Description
The ruins of a house at Lower Polpry date from the 17th century and are constructed of stone rubble. The roof structure has been removed, leaving only the shell of the building. The original layout is uncertain, but it likely faced north and was originally designed with two rooms and a through passage. There is a stone rubble cross wall on the right-hand (west) side of the passage, while the left-hand (east) side has no remaining partition. Inside, there is evidence of a possible blocked passage rear doorway in the south wall, visible only from the interior. The west room was heated by an end stack, which may have been added later, while the east room was heated by an end stack that previously contained a cloam oven.
In the 18th century, an outshot was added to the front (north) of the east room, featuring a possibly re-used 4-centred arch. Another outshot was also added to the front of the west room during the same period. The exterior retains the remains of the front and rear walls up to the first floor level, along with the gable ends. The south elevation has two window openings, with the west opening being splayed. Inside, the east fireplace has a chamfered granite lintel and jambs, while the fireplace in the west room has a roughly cut granite lintel. There is also a possibly re-used 4-centred granite arch between the left room and the outshot, which features a hollow chamfer and likely diagonal stop on the north side.
