Description
17 Broad Street is a town house dating from the 17th century, with a front range that was partly rebuilt in the early 18th century and refronted in the 19th century. The exterior features render that has replaced stucco on a rubble front, and it has a steep dry Delabole slate roof with coved and moulded eaves cornice, along with a rear lateral stack. The building has a deep plan that includes a 17th-century rear wing at a right angle. It stands three storeys tall and has a two-window range. The windows are 20th-century six-pane sashes, and the entrance features a 20th-century copy of an eight-panel door with fielded panels. Inside, there is an 18th-century dog-leg closed string staircase with turned balusters, which has been boarded in. An unusual 18th-century chimneypiece, featuring a shaped and eared entablature with dentils, was removed during extensive renovations in 1980.
