Description

Palm Cottage, with attached farm offices and cart shed, was built in the early to mid-19th century, with later 19th and 20th-century additions and alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble, with brick dressings, some parts painted and others rendered. The roof is slated, hipped, with ridge tiles, and incorporates end and axial stacks, the latter with brick shafts.

The buildings form a long range, with the house to the left, followed by the farm offices in the centre, and the cart shed at the right end. The house has a two-room plan; a central entrance leads to a room on either side, each heated by an end stack. The farm offices extend for five bays, attached to the right, and the cart shed, added in the late 19th century, has five bays with a wing to the rear. The main range, encompassing the house, is built into a bank on the rear side.

The house, two storeys high on a plinth, has a symmetrical three-window front. The first floor has three 19th-century 16-pane sashes with cambered brick arches. The ground floor has a central 20th-century wooden gabled porch with an inner 19th-century four-panelled and glazed door, and 19th-century 16-pane sashes to the left and right, also with cambered brick arches. The left end is blank. The rear elevation has no windows.

The farm offices are also two storeys high on a plinth, with rendered elevations above the plinth. The front has a symmetrical five-bay design, with three 19th-century 8-pane sashes on the first floor, alternating with two blind windows. The ground floor has a 20th-century door with a cambered arch to the right and left, and three 20th-century windows with cambered arches in the centre. The rear has two plank doors and a ventilator window to the left.

The cart shed is of single-story construction with a loft above, altered around the late 19th century. The ground floor originally contained five doorways with cambered brick arches; now it has two 6-pane windows, a plank door, and two blocked openings. The first floor has two loading doors with cambered brick arches. At the right end is a single doorway and a double doorway with a flat arch and a cambered arch, each featuring keystones. The rear wing, built into the bank, has two single doorways and a central double doorway at the upper ground floor level, all with cambered stone arches and keystones. The inner side of the cart shed has a ventilator window to the left and a blocked door to the right. A plank door is located at the rear of the main range.
