Description

The clock tower at Treworgey dates from 1733 and features a lower stage made of rubble with slate hanging above. It has grouted slate roofs with projecting eaves supported by wooden brackets and a square plan. The tower is designed in a Chinoiserie style and consists of three stages, culminating in a pagoda-like upper stage that has paired louvred openings and is topped with a weather vane. The west front includes a triangular-arched opening with decorative tracery, behind which are mesh and boards. Above this opening, the clock face has only one hand and was made by John Belling of Bodmin. There is a carved slate sundial from 1777 on the west wall, which is non-operational and features the Connock-Hodge crest with the inscription "EVERY HOUR/SHORTENS LIFE." A plain opening on the north side has an old panelled door. The cast bell, dated 1620, is inscribed "John Connock, His Bell." Although the interior was not inspected, there are subsidiary features including a wide flight of steps on the adjoining south side that rise to a terrace, flanked by dressed granite piers topped with ball finials.
