Description
The Clock Tower on Cromwell Road in Inverness is a two-stage clock tower built in the later 18th century, possibly in 1767. It has a near square plan and is constructed from roughly coursed red sandstone blocks with slaister pointing, raised ashlar margins, and a moulded cornice, topped with an elongated ogee roof. The southeast side features a 20th-century timber boarded door with a raised ashlar door surround, and there is an 'R' carved into the stone next to the door. A graffito reading 'JMCA Munro August 26 1861' is found on the southwest corner. An ashlar string course separates the two stages of the tower, which has a tapered elongated upper stage that is inset above the lower stage. A round metal clock face is located on the southeast side below the eaves, with oculi on the southwest and northeast sides. The roof is covered with West Highland slate laid in diminishing courses, and there are timber louvres on each face. At the top, a tall steel and wrought-iron weather vane is mounted.
Inside, there is a cobbled floor covered with earthen debris and exposed stone walls, with a timber ladder providing access to the upper stages. The tower houses a bronze bell dated 1767 along with its original fittings, which were originally hand-tolled. Additionally, there is a mid-19th century turret clock with a pendulum and weights that later operated the bell.
