Description

The Town House and Clock Tower in Stonehaven was built in 1790 by mason James Rhind from Aberdeen, with some later alterations and additions. This four-stage, single-bay tower has a square plan and features an open-work timber parapet. It is topped by a lead-covered bellcast spire on an octagonal timber belfry, which includes keystoned, semi-elliptical openings. The tower is situated on a corner site next to houses to the south and east. The north and west elevations are finished in ashlar, while the south and east are constructed from random rubble, with channelled long and short quoins and a blocking course.

On the west elevation, which faces The Cross, there is a vertically-boarded timber door at the center of the ground floor, featuring a lintel dated '1790'. To the left of the door is a handle-socket and spout for a pump. The second stage has an opening that incorporates a barometer dial dated 1852, leading to the third stage with a single window. The fourth stage has a blocked window above which is a clock face set into a pedimented architrave, dated 1896, breaking the wallhead and flanked by a timber balustrade. A later building is attached to the outer right angle of the third stage.

The north elevation, facing High Street, has blocked windows on the first, second, and third stages, with a glazed window at the fourth stage. The south and east elevations feature a later building abutting the third stage, with a blank fourth stage.

The tower's windows are timber sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The lead spire is topped with a ball finial and a cockerel weathervane.
