Description
Sheer-Legs at Thornbush Quay in Inverness is a lifting apparatus likely built in 1909 by Rose Street Foundry Co Ltd. It features a pair of angled front stays, each approximately 12 meters long, with their lower ends pivoted on the quay edge and spaced 5.5 meters apart. The upper ends of the front stays are connected by a longer back stay, which is also made of riveted steel. The lower end of the back stay can be adjusted along a screw to tilt the front stays over the quay wall. A hoist, powered by the same motor as the screw, is used to raise and lower a pulley block with a hook that can lift up to 25 tons. The electrically driven mechanisms are contained within a small corrugated-iron hut.
