Description

The Old Farmhouse is a service wing of a former great house, which later served as a cider house and has been used for domestic purposes since the 1950s. It features a datestone inscribed with 'EC 1598'. The structure is built from slatestone and other rubble, with a dressed granite doorway and a slate roof that has gable ends, including a gable return at the rear where it was once linked to the main house. The building has a single-depth plan and is partly two storeys high. A low range was heightened in the 1950s, during which extra window openings were added. The central doorway is a hollow-chamfered, four-centred arched granite entrance with a very old planked door. There is cobbled paving leading diagonally from this doorway to a rear doorway on the left, which retains the original wooden jambs of a former shouldered-headed doorway. Additionally, there is one original chamfered single-light window. Inside the cider house, there is an enormous apple-crushing base with deep serrations.
