Description

Woodside is a house, originally two dwellings, dating to the mid to late 18th century, with alterations and extensions dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The front elevation is of elvan ashlar, with killas rubble to the sides and some slate hanging to the rear. The roofs are mostly dry Delabole slate, featuring brick chimneys over gable ends. There is a rendered axial stack and a brick chimney over the end wall of a hipped rear wing, with a scantle-roofed lean-to beyond, incorporating a further brick chimney.

Originally a small, single-room house with an entrance to one side, and a larger, two-room house with a central entrance, the property was converted into a single dwelling around the late 18th century. At this time, a stair turret was added or remodelled to the rear, left of the middle, and a rear wing was added to the larger part of the house on the right, along with further 19th-century lean-to additions.

The north front has five windows, featuring old 16-pane hornless sashes with much crown glass and internal fielded-panelled window shutters. The second ground floor opening contains the original six-panel door with fielded panels and an overlight. The fourth ground floor opening is now a 16-pane sash but was previously an entrance to the larger house. A plinth is present, with slightly cambered elvan arches over the openings, incorporating projecting bracket-moulded keystones. A moulded cornice sits under a rendered parapet with plain coping. A round-headed sash with wide glazing bars is located at the rear of the stair turret.

A partial internal inspection of the middle front room and stair hall revealed an 18th-century moulded plaster ceiling cornice and an eared fireplace surround in the middle room. The stair hall contains an open-well, closed-string stair with stick balusters on plinths, and an 18th-century moulded ceiling cornice. Further original or old features may be present in other parts of the house. The house retains unspoilt elevations on all sides and appears to retain much of its original internal plan and features.
