Description
The tombchest and headstone of Jane Proffit is located 2.0 metres east of the chancel of the Church of St. Michael. The tombchest dates from the early to mid 17th century and features a low slate rubble chest that is partly buried in the ground, topped with a rectangular slate lid. The inscription on the lid is eroded, and there is a coat of arms carved in shallow relief. The headstone commemorates Jane, the wife of John Proffit, who died in 1798, as well as their son John, who also died in 1798. This slate headstone has a triangular top and features inscriptions in upper and lower case lettering with serifs, along with a verse below.
