Description
The sundial, walls, and steps in front of Fowey Hall were built in 1898 for Sir George Hanson. Made of granite ashlar, the structure features a vermiculated finish below a chamfered string course. The circular wall surrounds a central sundial, with semi-circular steps on either side leading down to a central landing. These steps are flanked by a low balustrade plinth, which has squat square terminal piers topped with ball finials. All walls are finished with cyma-moulded copings. The sundial itself has a tapered shaft with a cavetto twist leading up to a necking, which is topped with a bowl that has egg enrichment along its moulded cornice. This structure is included for its group value.
