Description
This is a memorial to Michael Chuke, located about 8 metres north of the Church of St James in Kilkhampton. The headstone dates from the mid-18th century and features a swan-necked top. Michael Chuke, who lived from 1679 to 1742, was a pupil of the renowned sculptor Grinling Gibbons and created several memorials within Kilkhampton church. He also worked at Stowe for the Grenvilles, where he carved a pulpit and wainscoting for the chapel; this woodwork was later moved in 1739 to the private chapel of Stowe in Buckinghamshire.
