Description

The Lawrence Monument is a headstone located in the churchyard about 17 metres southeast of the south chapel of the Church of St. Mary and St. Julian. It dates from the 18th century and is made of slate. The headstone features a segmental head that steps out to the sides and has an oval inscription panel bordered with a cable-moulded design. Surrounding the panel are entwined flowers and foliage, with a laudatory inscription at the base that reads: "Who was a careful, industrious, faithful and affectionate Wife...". This monument commemorates Mary Lawrence, who served for 12 years as matron and governess of the poor of the parish, and it was erected in 1797.
