Description
Knighton Farmhouse likely originated in the 17th century and was extended around the mid-19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of stone rubble, rendered on the front, with a rag slate roof and rendered brick shafts to the end and side stacks. It has an āLā shaped plan. The front range is a two-room and cross-passage plan, with heating provided by end stacks. A double-depth wing extends to the rear left, heated by an axial and side lateral stack, with unheated outbuildings at the far end. The left-hand side of this wing seems to contain remnants of an earlier farmhouse, while the right-hand side is likely a mid-19th century addition.
The front of the farmhouse has a near-symmetrical three-window facade with 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows. A 19th-century panelled door is set within a 19th-century glazed porch with margin glazing bars. The rear wing has an asymmetrical four-window front with 19th-century 12-pane and 16-pane sashes on both the ground and first floors. Early 19th-century windows on the rear (left) elevation ventilate the dairy. The interior has not been inspected, but there may be interesting features hidden beneath later coverings, particularly in the earlier part of the rear wing.
