Description

Upton Barton is a farmhouse that likely dates from the mid-17th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features a slate-hung front elevation with rag slates. The roof is slate with hipped ends, and there are brick and slate-hung shafts for the end stacks, as well as a rear lateral stack.

The building has a front range with a three-room and cross passage plan, including a stair projection at the rear of the passage. The hall is unheated and has a rear lateral stack, while the large inner room and the lower room are both heated by end stacks. There are two one-room plan wings at the rear, used as dairies, and a 19th-century outshut between these wings.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. It is built on a slope, with the ground rising to the left. The entrance is located to the left of the center and features a 19th-century door. The windows are mostly late 19th or early 20th century, including an 8-pane sash to the left and two similar sashes to the right. The first floor has three 8-pane sashes and a 6-pane sash above the entrance. There is also a small lean-to outshut on the left and a 19th-century porch that leads directly into the large inner room on the right.

The interior has only been partially inspected. The larger inner room contains a blocked fireplace and is heated by a Rayburn stove. The hall features a 20th-century grate and plastered ceilings. A full inspection of the interior may uncover additional interesting features. In the front garden, there are remains of dressed granite, including several mullions, which may have been removed from Upton Farmhouse during its partial remodeling in the 19th century. The site of the manor house is nearby, and the remains of Upton Castle to the south are designated as an Ancient Monument.
