Description
Clitters is a house, probably from the 18th century, constructed of stone rubble with granite dressings. The front features slate hung above the ground floor, and it has a rag slate roof with a hipped end on the left and a gable end on the right, possibly adorned with some early crested ridge tiles. There is a stone rubble stack, partly slate hung, on the right side.
The building has a two-room single depth plan, with the ground sloping down to the right. The entrance is located to the left of centre and leads directly into the large room on the right, which is heated by an end stack. To the left is a small unheated room that was originally separated by a screen, which has since been removed. A 20th-century stair has been inserted directly opposite the entrance.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front. The entrance, located to the left of centre, features a 19th-century door within a 19th-century slate porch that has a hipped end. To the left is a small 19th-century one-light casement window, and to the right is a 19th or 20th-century two-light casement window. The first floor has similar window arrangements, with a 19th or 20th-century one-light window on the left and a two-light casement on the right, both equipped with 20th-century timber shutters on the exterior. The side walls are unpierced, and there are no extensions or outshuts. A very small one-light window on the rear elevation provides light and ventilation to the smaller left-hand room.
Inside, the house features slate flag floors and slightly chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops. The fireplace has a roughly cut timber lintel, covered by a circa 19th-century mantle shelf, and there is a cloam oven with a clay door. The 20th-century open tread stair is also present.
Clitters stands in an isolated position and remains unaltered and unspoilt, making it unusual to find a house of this type and plan without extensions and alterations.
