Description
Probably dating to the early 18th century, Trebant Farmhouse is a substantial building constructed of laced stone rubble, with rendering and paint on the front elevation and slate hanging on the left side. The roof is covered with scantle slate. Granite ashlar stacks at the ends of the building have moulded granite caps, and a rear lateral stack is made of stone rubble. The farmhouse has a double-depth plan, unusual for its period, and a central entrance leads into a wide stair hall with a 19th-century staircase. To the right of the hall is a large room, and to the left, a smaller parlour, both heated by end stacks. A large kitchen is located to the rear right, with a rear lateral stack providing heat, and a smaller dairy is positioned to the rear left. A granite winder stair, situated between the kitchen and dairy, provides direct access from the kitchen to the first floor.
The two-storey, symmetrical front elevation has three windows. The central entrance features a chamfered granite four-centred arch with curved diagonal stops and a 19th-century plank door. It is flanked by two 19th-century hornless sash windows with twenty panes each, with a hoodmould above. Three 19th-century hornless sash windows with sixteen panes each are on the first floor. A possibly reset granite four-centred arch, partly blocked and with a window inserted to light the kitchen, is visible on the right-hand side. The rear elevation features two two-light granite mullion windows on both the ground and first floors, as well as an outshut to the rear right.
Inside, the wide stair hall contains the 19th-century stair. The hall on the right has a fireplace with a large chamfered granite surround, again with curved diagonal stops on the jambs. The parlour on the left has a small chamfered granite fireplace surround. The kitchen to the rear right has a blocked fireplace, deep thin bowtell moulded floor joists, and a fine quality granite winder stair rising from the left-hand wall. The dairy has a large niche below the winder stair, possibly to contain a salting trough, with a granite pier at the outer corner. The first floor was not inspected.
A garden wall of stone rubble and granite runs along the front of the property.
