Description

This building is a bank barn and horse engine house, dating from the early to mid 19th century, with extensions added in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is constructed from local slate rubble and features granite quoins, topped with a hipped roof made of Delabole rag slate and red clay ridge tiles. The extension on the left has a gable-ended lower level roof.

The barn has a plan that includes a shippon on the ground floor and a barn above, accessed via a doorway at a higher level at the rear. Attached to the rear left is a polygonal-plan horse engine house. There is also a later single-storey outbuilding on the left end, which has two doorways at the front and a wide doorway at the back.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical north front. There are two shippon doorways on the left and right sides of the front, featuring flat red brick arches, along with ventilation slits at the center and sides. A loft doorway is positioned above to the right of center, with a small window to the left of center, both having timber lintels. A wide shallow opening between these features has been blocked. The single-storey extension has doorways on both the left and right sides.

At the rear of the barn, there is a midstrey (porch) to the left of center, with slate rubble side walls supporting a slate lean-to roof and a flight of slate steps inside. A ventilation slit is located to the left of the midstrey. To the right is the larger horse engine house, which has a three-sided end and a hipped slate roof. The back of the extension on the right features a wide central doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
