Description

Poltreworgey Farmhouse is a farmhouse that possibly dates from the early to mid 18th century. It is constructed of stone rubble and features brick segmental arches over its openings, along with a slate-hung stair projection on the rear elevation. The roof is covered in bitumen-coated slate, with gable ends that continue in a cat-slide over an integral outshut at the rear. There are brick chimney stacks on the gable ends, with a projecting stack on the right side.

The building has an interesting layout, consisting of two main reception rooms at the front, a central cross passage, and two smaller service rooms located in the integral outshut at the rear. A stairwell at the back of the passage rises above the roof of the rear outshut. There is a thick wall separating the reception rooms from the service rooms.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall with an attic and has a symmetrical three-window front. The windows are 20th-century replacements set in earlier openings, all topped with brick segmental arches. The central entrance door is also from the 20th century and is flanked by two 20th-century windows, with three similar windows above and a two-light casement in a hipped full dormer at the center. The rear elevation features the integral outshut with the slate-hung stair tower, which has an original 28-pane window, along with a similar window below and 20th-century casements to the right and left in the outshut.

Inside, the layout has been partly remodeled, but some original partitions remain. The 18th-century stair features a closed string, square newels, a moulded rail, and heavy square stick balusters. There are simple two-panel doors from the late 18th century on the first floor.

Overall, Poltreworgey Farmhouse is an interesting example of an early to mid 18th-century farmhouse, with its original plan largely intact. The rear elevation, particularly the outshut and stair tower, is a significant feature of the building.
