Description
This is a cottage, possibly from the 17th century, located at The Old Cottages, No 3, in Tintagel, specifically 50 yards south of Trebarwith Farm. The building is constructed of slate stone rubble, which is rendered and painted on the front elevation, and features a rag slate roof with gable ends. It has a stone rubble front lateral stack and a one-room plan. The entrance is on the left and includes a possibly contemporary 17th-century shallow porch. Entering the cottage leads directly into the ground floor room, which is heated by the front lateral stack.
There is a 20th-century outshot extension added to the front right and lower right-hand gable end. This cottage was added to the lower right-hand gable end of a circa 16th-century house that has a three-room and through passage plan. The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical single window front with a plank door on the left, situated in the shallow entrance porch, which is lit by a narrow one-light greenstone window. The projecting front lateral stack is accompanied by a single-storey lean-to outshot on the right. The first floor features one-light casement windows to the right and left of the stack.
Inside, there is a fireplace in the front wall with a lintel that is obscured by a mantleshelf. The first-floor joists were replaced in the 19th century and only extend over the left-hand side, while the right-hand side is open to the roof. The roof structure was likely replaced in the late 19th century. This cottage is particularly picturesque and forms a group with the adjoining house.
