Description
The Bodilly chest tombs, located approximately 3 metres south of the porch of the Church of St Maddern, are a cluster of four chest tombs dating from the early 19th century. The large chest is dedicated to Margaret Bodilly, the wife of R H Bodilly of Penzance, who died in 1826 at the age of 26. It also commemorates R H Bodilly, their son, who died in 1830 at the age of 32, and Ralph H Bodilly, who passed away in 1853 at the age of 88. The chest on the left (north) is for R Millet, who died in 1826, and Ann Towers, who died in 1830, along with two others that have inscriptions that are no longer legible. The tombs are made of granite ashlar and feature incised slate slabs. They are rectangular in shape, with two positioned at right angles to each other and two located in the angle behind.
