Description
68 Lemon Street is a town house that has been converted into a shop. It was built in 1823 for Thomas Treloar, a merchant. The front is made of local freestone ashlar over a granite plinth, and it has an asbestos slate roof with brick stacks at each end. The building has a double-depth plan with a central entrance hall flanked by two rooms at the front. It stands three storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front.
The central doorway slightly projects and features a round arch with ashlar pilasters, a moulded architrave, and a moulded cornice. The door is a six-panel design with a traceried fanlight above. There is a sill string on the first floor and wooden brackets under the eaves soffit. The windows have shallow segmental arches with projecting keyblocks and original 16-pane hornless sashes, except on the ground floor where they have been replaced with plate glass.
Inside, there is an open-well open-string staircase with a mahogany handrail that scrolls over the newel. The doorcases have moulded architraves with corner blocks and moulded hoods. The windows feature panelled shutters, and the ceilings are adorned with moulded and carved plaster.
