Description
No. 24 is a town house, now used as an office, built around 1803 by Richard Arthur, who was both the builder and lessee. The building features a granite ashlar basement with local freestone ashlar above, topped by an asbestos slate roof that includes two hipped roof dormers behind a parapet and brick end stacks. It has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, plus a later attic over the basement, with a front that has a two-window range.
The entrance is marked by a round-headed doorcase with fluted pilasters and an open pediment on the left. It has panelled reveals, a six-panel door, and a spoked fanlight. There is a mid-floor string course, a moulded parapet cornice, and early 19th-century hornless sash windows with glazing bars set under flat arches with projecting key blocks. The straight joints flanking the wider ground-floor window and to the left of the window above, along with surviving voussoirs, indicate that both openings have been reduced in size.
The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The original latticed wrought-iron railings flank the entrance bridge and stand over the forecourt wall, which adjoins granite steps leading down to the basement.
