Description
No. 22 Lemon Street is a town house that has been converted into commercial premises. It was originally built around 1803 and largely rebuilt in a similar style around 1970. The building was constructed by Almond Hitchens, who was both a builder and a tallow chandler. The front features reconstituted stone ashlar and a dry Delabole slate mansard roof with four dormers set behind a parapet, along with a brick stack on the right side. The building has a fairly deep plan and consists of two storeys plus an attic over a basement, with a regular four-window front.
On the left side, there is a round-headed doorway with a recessed fluted architrave, which includes a panelled door and a fanlight above. The windows are 20th-century horned sashes with glazing bars, set under shallow arches that have projecting key blocks and a parapet cornice. This decorative work is flanked by panelled giant pilasters, with the right-hand pilaster being original, as is the masonry above the parapet cornice level on the other side. The interior has not been inspected but was rebuilt around 1970. The building is included in the register for its group value.
