Description

Nos. 30 and 31 are a pair of townhouses located at the end of a row on Lemon Street in Truro, dating from around 1803 and built by Randell. The houses feature a granite ashlar basement, while the rest is constructed from coursed dressed local stone with some granite dressings. They have dry Delabole slate hips behind parapets and a slate-hung gable behind the left-hand hip. The buildings are designed in a double-depth plan and are nearly symmetrical, with a front that has three bays.

The nearly central doorways are set within a porch created by a first-floor canted stuccoed bay window. This window has horned sashes beneath a moulded parapet cornice, supported by two slender Tuscan columns. Inside the porch, there are two six-panel doors under a blind elliptical fanlight. The flanking sections have one-window fronts with shallow segmental arches and projecting key blocks, mid-floor strings, and moulded parapets. No. 30 features probably original 20-pane sashes, while No. 31 has later four-pane horned sashes.

Inside No. 31, there are many original carpentry and joinery details, as well as some plaster ceiling cornices. No. 30 was not inspected. The property also includes subsidiary features such as a pair of stepped bridges on either side of the porch, a balustrade, steps, and forecourt railings, along with central basement steps.
