Description

The Royal Cornwall Hospital, located on Infirmary Hill in Truro, is an infirmary hospital dating from 1799. It was designed by architect William Wood, who oversaw the development of Lemon Street. The building features local freestone ashlar walls and a dry Delabole slate mansard roof, which includes open pediments over the entrance and the fronting cross wing on the right, along with roof dormers that also have pediments.

The hospital has a shallow depth plan and stands three storeys tall, plus an attic over a basement. The nearly symmetrical north front has a 3:3:3-bay arrangement, with the taller central bays projecting forward and rising to four storeys, topped with an open pediment. The three-storey, three-window projecting cross wing on the right mirrors this design. There is a first-floor sill string and a moulded cornice at the parapets, with flat arches above the original hornless sash windows that feature glazing bars.

The central doorway of the main block has a moulded architrave and a hood supported by consoles, with the date 1799 inscribed on the frieze. It includes a six-panel door with a three-pane overlight above. Above this, there is a sash window within a round-arched recessed surround, which is set over an apron featuring the Cornish Arms flanked by swags over guttae. The third floor has a sash window in a similar but simpler recessed panel with a stepped keyblock. The middle of the other bays on the first floor has aprons inscribed with "Cornwall and Infirmary."

The cross wing features three linked moulded segmental arches on the ground floor, moulded round arches over Corinthian capitals on the first floor, and a rusticated round arch in the middle of the second floor, with blind central windows. The interior has not been inspected.
