Description
Poltair House, now Poltair Hospital, is a country house built circa 1905-1912 and rebuilt after a fire in 1905. It is constructed of granite ashlar with granite dressings, featuring hipped dry Delabole slate roofs and granite chimneys over the cross walls and projecting corners. The roof includes three dormers with segmental pediments.
The house follows an overall L-shaped plan with a double depth, providing two rooms at the front, a central cross passage, and a large entrance hall behind the right-hand room, leading from the right-hand entrance front to a large central stair hall. A large service wing extends at right angles behind the stair hall and entrance hall. The garden front is symmetrical with a 2:1:2 bay arrangement and a central doorway. Architectural details include a plinth, mid-floor band, a plain parapet, and pilaster corners that break forward and are surmounted by panelled chimneys. The four ground floor bays on the left and right have three-light canted bay windows. Original 12-pane horned sash windows and a glazed door with overlight are present. The entrance front mirrors the detailing with original doors and windows.
The entrance hall and stair hall retain original features in an 18th-century style, including an open-well staircase with turned balusters and modillioned plaster ceiling cornices. Other rooms were not inspected.
