Description
This is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with significant remodelling and extensions in the 18th century. The front garden walls and gate piers are also listed. Originally constructed with granite rubble, the front of the house was clad in dressed granite in the 18th century. The roof is half-hipped, covered in scantle slate, with brick chimneys at the end walls, and likely a later axial chimney. Original features include two crested ridge tiles and cast iron ogee gutters.
The house plan is complex, with 17th-century walling surviving in the lower parts of the front and returns at either end. By the 19th century, it was largely rebuilt as a double-depth plan. The southwest front is slightly asymmetrical, with a doorway to the right of centre and a small window to the left. A 18th-century six-panel door with intersecting glazing bars is set within a distyle Tuscan porch. The windows are primarily 20th-century horned sashes, except for a 12-pane sash to the left of the doorway. The rear of the house features an original 18th-century 12-pane stair sash and an older two-light window to the pantry, while other windows are 20th-century sashes or casements in original 18th-century openings.
Inside, the house retains features from the 18th century, including a large kitchen fireplace with an oven and reused 17th-century dressed masonry. A dog-leg staircase with column-turned balusters, some 18th-century panelled doors, and a strutted collar roof structure are also present. The rectangular front garden is enclosed by painted rubble walls that ramp up at either end, aligning with the main doorway and containing granite gate piers with pointed heads.
