Description

Banns Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating back to the 17th century, with significant alterations and additions made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and further extensions in the 20th. It is constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings, and has a scantle slate roof covered in grout, with dressed granite stacks at the gable end. Cast-iron gutters in an ogee shape run along the roofline.

The original plan was likely a two-room layout with a cross passage between them, leading to a rear stair projection. In the 18th century, part of the front wall and the right-hand end were rebuilt, and an outshut was added behind the right-hand room, matching the depth of the stair projection. The eaves were raised in the 19th century, and the outshut was extended again in the 20th century.

The south front has a near-symmetrical appearance with three windows. The openings are mainly from the 18th century, with the exception of an original 17th-century window at ground floor left. This window has a chamfered outer frame, originally for a two-light mullioned window. A 20th-century ledged door with an overlight sits in the centre, and the windows are late 19th or 20th-century four-pane horns sash windows. There are also 17th-century chamfered window openings in the left-hand gable end (now blocked) and in the left-hand wall of the original stair projection. A large granite mounting block is located beside one of these windows. The interior features mainly late 19th or 20th-century fittings. There is a possible 17th-century fireplace hidden behind a later one in the left-hand room.
