Description
Nos 1 to 5 on High Street in Chacewater is a terrace of buildings that were originally shops and are now houses, dating from the early to mid-19th century. The walls are made of Killas rubble, featuring cambered brick arches with projecting keystones above most openings. The first floor on the right-hand end is slate-hung, and the roofs are covered with asbestos slate, with brick gable and axial chimneys that are hipped to the right. The eaves project and are supported by shaped wooden brackets.
The terrace is two storeys high and has a regular nine-window front facing the street. The left three houses, Nos 1, 2, and 3, have four-paned horned sash windows, while Nos 4 and 5 feature original 12-pane hornless sash windows with wider central lights. The entrances are located to the left or right and all have 20th-century doors. Near the center, No. 2 has a wooden shopfront, although the shop window is now blocked and has a sash window inserted. This is flanked by two pilastered doorways with traceried fanlights, with the right-hand doorway being wider and divided into two entrances. An entablature runs above this entire feature.
On the far right, there is a single-storey, one-room addition with a tapered room under a flat lead roof, which was once another shop and now has a 20th-century window. The slate-hanging above features the original 12-pane hornless sash. The interiors have not been inspected. Chacewater is known for its many surviving 19th-century shopfronts, and this particular shopfront, despite alterations, remains an interesting example.
