Description

Chymder House is a town house dating from the early to mid 19th century. It features a stucco exterior, likely over rubble, with a moulded plinth and fluted end pilasters that are richly decorated. The building has egg and dart enriched moulded architraves with fleur-de-lis keyblocks, ground-floor sill brackets, a carved first-floor sill string, and a moulded eaves cornice beneath projecting eaves that have a panelled soffit. The roof is a hipped design covered with grouted scantle slate, and it has a brick stack on the left and a rendered axial stack towards the right. The gutters are made of cast iron and feature relief decoration.

The house has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys tall with a regular three-window front. It retains original 12-pane hornless sash windows. The entrance features an enriched panelled doorway with carved consoles, a moulded and crested hood, and a carved frieze above a name plaque, positioned centrally to the window on the left. The right-hand return has a three-bay arrangement with blind windows on the left, a central round-arched stair window with coloured margin panes above a 12-pane sash, and a similar sash above the doorway at the far right, which mirrors the front doorway but includes a keyblock.

The other elevations of the building are also complete and display similar detailing. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to retain original features that reflect the high quality of the exterior. Chymder House is a richly detailed front that makes a significant contribution to an exceptionally fine street.
