Description
The milestone adjacent to No. 11 on Victoria Road is a Grade II listed structure from the early 19th century. Made of granite, it has a triangular shape with a flat top and stands about 0.80 meters tall. The milestone is painted white and features black lettering that reads "PENRICE / 2 MILE" on the south-west face and "ST / AUSTLE / ¾" on the south-east face.
This milestone is believed to be one of a pair installed in the early 19th century by the Swale family, located along the main route to their home, Penrice House, which is approximately two miles south of St Austell.
The milestone is designated as Grade II for several reasons: it is a clear and well-preserved example of an early 19th-century milestone in its original location, it has group value as part of a pair of milestones (the other is also listed as Grade II), and it is notable for being erected by a private landowner rather than a turnpike trust.
