Description
The milestone on Penpillick Hill, located 190 meters north of Vine Cottage, dates from 1764 and is made of stone. It has a rectangular shape with a semi-circular head and stands approximately 0.75 meters high on the verge of the road's west side. The milestone is painted white and features inscriptions in Sans Serif capitals: "ST / AUSTEL / Vi / TRURO / XIX," with the lettering highlighted in black paint.
This milestone was part of a series erected in 1764 along the road from Grampound to Lostwithiel by the St Austell and Lostwithiel Turnpike Trust. Walter Treleavers provided the stones at a cost of 17 shillings each, including delivery. The distances marked on the milestones were calculated from the 8-mile stone at the end of the adjacent Truro Turnpike Trust, resulting in the half-mile distances to St Austell that are recorded on all milestones in this group.
The milestone is designated at Grade II due to its intact condition, original position, and its group value with other listed milestones along the Grampound to Lostwithiel turnpike route.
