Description

Farmhouse. It probably dates from the mid 17th century, with alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The farmhouse is built of granite rubble with granite dressings, partly rendered. It has a slate roof with ridge coping tiles and gable ends, with brick and granite gable stacks to the left and right, and a front lateral stack in granite ashlar. It was likely originally a two-room plan with a cross passage, featuring a hall to the left heated by the front lateral stack and a kitchen to the right heated by the gable end stack. A straight joint to the left of the hall window suggests that the inner room at the left end was added in the late 17th or 18th century. This end room is divided into two spaces: a small parlour at the front, heated by the gable end stack, and an unheated dairy at the rear. Partitions divide the spaces to the left and right of the passage, however, the wall between the hall and the left-end room is solid and battered. A straight staircase was inserted in the rear of the passage, the location of an earlier stair is uncertain. The building is two storeys high, with the passage and lower end stepped back to the right. The passage has a 4-centred arched granite doorway with step stops, and an enclosed 20th-century door protected by a pitched hood supported by a granite monolith. A 20th-century 4-pane sash window is at ground floor to the right, and a similar window at first floor has a chamfered granite lintel. A stack is located to the left, with a 20th-century window at ground floor with a chamfered granite lintel and remaining jambs from an earlier window. A 2-light casement is above under the eaves. Slate strings are present above the hall window and the ground floor window to the lower end. The inner room at the left end has 4-pane sashes at both ground and first floors with plain granite lintels. A single-storey rubble lean-to extends to the right end. The left end is rendered, with a small ventilation window at ground floor in the dairy and a large 4-pane sash at first floor. The rear of the dairy has an unglazed ventilation window with a chamfered granite surround. A 20th-century window is to the rear of the passage and another lean-to to the rear of the lower end. Inside, the passage has a straight staircase to the rear, dividing to the right and left at the first floor. A fireplace is blocked in the lower gable end. The hall’s lateral fireplace has a plain, heavy granite lintel and one jamb, and a cloam oven with a cast iron door to the left. The dairy has slate shelves and a granite pig-salting trough. The front parlour has some roughly chamfered cross-beams, most of which are 19th-century replacements. At first floor, all partitions are present, and the fireplace is closed in the hall chamber. Straight feet of principal rafters are visible, but the roof is not accessible.
