Description

The milestone adjacent to the house known as 'Milestone' in Treverbyn dates from 1836 and is made of stone. It has a triangular shape and a flat top with a metal pin inserted into it. The milestone is painted white and features black lettering that reads: B / 7 / St A / 4. There is also a benchmark incised at the upper left corner of the right-hand face of the stone. It is positioned against the garden wall of the house.

Historically, the St Austell and Lostwithiel Turnpike Trust was established by an Act of Parliament in 1761. Between 1835 and 1836, the Trust constructed a new road that connected the southern route through the county with the central route from Launceston to Bodmin, which included seven milestones over a distance of almost eight miles.

This milestone is designated for its intact condition, dating from 1836, and for its original position, as well as its group value with other listed milestones along the Bodmin to St Austell turnpike route.
