Description

The milestone on Holmbush Road was built around 1764 for the St Austell and Lostwithiel Trust. Made of granite, it has a rectangular shape with a semi-circular top and stands approximately 0.90 meters high. The stone features inscriptions in Sans Serif capitals: "ST / AUSTEL / Ii / TRURO / XV," with the letters highlighted in black paint. The lower part of the front (south) face includes an inscribed benchmark.

The St Austell and Lostwithiel Trust was established by an Act of Parliament in 1761, and this milestone is one of several that were erected and maintained by the Trust. The distances marked on the milestones were calculated from the eight-mile stone at the end of the nearby Truro Turnpike Trust, which is why this milestone indicates a half-mile distance to St Austell.

This milestone is designated as Grade II because it is a clear and well-preserved example of a late 18th-century milestone that remains in its original location. It also holds group value with other listed milestones erected by the St Austell and Lostwithiel Trust, one of the earliest turnpike trusts in the county.
