Description
The milestone opposite No. 92 Truro Road dates from around 1764 and was created for the St Austell and Lostwithiel Trust. Made of granite, it has a rectangular shape with a semi-circular head and stands approximately 1.15 meters tall. The milestone is inscribed in sans serif capitals with the text: ST / AUSTELL / .i / TRURO / XIII. The lettering is highlighted in black paint, and the second 'L' in St Austell appears to have been added later.
The St Austell and Lostwithiel Trust was established by an Act of Parliament in 1761, and this milestone is one of several that were erected and maintained by the Trust. The distances marked on these milestones were calculated from the eight-mile stone at the end of the nearby Truro Turnpike Trust, which is why this milestone indicates a half-mile distance to St Austell.
This milestone is designated as Grade II for being a clear and well-preserved example of a late 18th-century milestone and for its group value with other listed milestones erected by the St Austell and Lostwithiel Trust, one of the earliest turnpike trusts in the county.
