Description
111 and 113 Charlestown Road is a building constructed to house a china-clay crushing plant, now serving as a workshop since 1992. It was built around 1825 to 1840, as indicated by its presence on the 1843 tithe map. The structure is made of granite ashlar and features a half-hipped slate roof. It has a rectangular plan with remnants of a rear wing that once housed a water wheel to power the plant.
The exterior consists of two storeys and a three-window range. There are granite lintels over a central mid-20th century window and widened double doors at the outer bays. Additionally, granite lintels are present over horned and unhorned eight-over-eight sash windows, and there is a double loft door to the left. The right-hand gable has stone steps leading up to a 20th-century ledged-and-braced loft door, with a small window to the left.
Inside, the building features heavy beams resting on granite stub walls, although the roof is obscured. It is located close to the harbour, which was completed in 1801 to facilitate the export of china clay, and is part of an important and largely unaltered group of buildings.
