Description
The milestone located 100 meters northeast of Trewhiddle Lodge was erected around 1826 and marks the road between St Austell and Mevagissey, now known as the B3273. It is positioned on the west side of the road within a wide verge.
This milestone is made of granite and has been whitewashed. It has a rectangular shape with a rounded top, standing approximately 0.91 meters high and 0.40 meters wide. The face of the milestone features black lettering that reads "ST A 1," with a large benchmark positioned above the inscription.
Historically, this milestone is situated on the southern route from St Austell to Mevagissey, passing through London Apprentice and Pentewan. The road was not designated as a turnpike and was first documented on C & J Greenwood's county map of 1827. In the early 19th century, it likely served to transport china clay from St Austell to the harbour at Pentewan, which was constructed by Sir Christopher Hawkins between 1818 and 1826. A railway built parallel to the road followed in 1829 to facilitate the clay transport.
The milestone's location is noted on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1888, indicating a distance of one mile from St Austell, with a similar inscription appearing on the second edition map from 1907.
This milestone is designated at Grade II due to its historic interest as a notable example of an early 19th-century milestone associated with the china clay transportation, and for its intact condition in its original location.
