Description
The Quayside Hotel and Reading Rooms is a hotel, adjoining house, and reading rooms located in Polruan, dating from the early 19th century, with the reading rooms opening in 1875. The building is constructed of rubble stone and features a slate roof with gabled ends, as well as a hipped and gabled projecting wing on the left side. It has three storeys facing the harbour and a single storey on West Street.
The hotel section on the left has an asymmetrical front with five windows. The projecting wing includes double doors inserted to the right, two 20th-century four-light casement windows, and a glazed door between them, all flanked by two granite posts under a lean-to roof. The first floor has horned sash windows with eight panes each, while the second floor of the projecting wing features plastic sash windows. The harbour front has three hornless timber sash windows, each with eight panes, on the first and second floors, along with a tall round-headed staircase window to the left of centre, which has eighteen panes.
To the right, there is a regular two-window front that breaks forward under a higher roof, featuring a four-pane sash window under brick soldier arches across three floors. At the rear, there is a single-storey reading room with a barometer on the southeast side. The building is included for its group value. The interior has not been inspected.
