Description

Numbers 23, 24, and 25 are three attached houses built around 1780. They are constructed of brick with limestone dressings, an ashlar rear elevation, and a pantile mansard roof. The houses have a double-depth plan and are of a mid-Georgian style. They are three storeys high with a basement, and include two-storey side blocks. Each house originally had a 4-window range. Numbers 24 and 25 form a near-symmetrical pair, with number 23 matching them but without the side block. Pilasters rise to a cornice and parapet. Each house has a pedimented doorcase supported by narrow brackets. Number 23 and 25 have their doorcases to the right, and number 24 to the left. The doorcases feature rectangular overlights with decorative glazing bars and six-panel doors. Wide relieving arches are above the canted three-light ground-floor bays, which are two storeys high on number 25. The houses have string courses, sill bands, and moulded copings. Number 25 has 9/9-pane sashes, while the others have 6/6-pane sashes. The windows above the doorway of number 25 have stepped voussoirs and 3/3-pane sashes. The rear elevation features full-height three-light canted bays. Number 24 includes an entrance block with a semicircular-arched doorway to the basement, located below a tripartite window and paired segmental-headed first-floor windows. Number 25 has a segmental-arched entrance and steps leading down to the basement.

The interior of number 25 features a hall divided from the central stairwell by a moulded semicircular arch with panelled reveals. A semicircular arch is also present in the right-hand front room, which is one room deep. The large stairwell contains an open-well staircase with column-on-vase balusters, column newels, a wreathed rail, and wainscotting. The front bay has sash shutters, and folding two-panel shutters are at the rear. Six-panel doors, wainscotting to a dado, a good modillion cornice, a ceiling rose, a cast-iron grate with brass feet, and a replacement marble fireplace are also present in the front ground-floor room. Cast-iron area railings curve up the steps to the front doors. Number 25 was originally listed on 4 March 1977.
