Description

A terrace of four houses at 1-4 Kensington Place, Clifton, Bristol, built in 1842 by Charles Underwood. The houses are constructed of limestone ashlar, with party wall stacks and a concealed roof. They are arranged in a double-depth plan, with two storeys, an attic, and a basement, and each house has a two-window front. The formal terrace features projecting end houses, a banded ground floor, a plat band, and a cornice. The attic has its own cornice. The inner doorways are semicircular-arched, featuring plate-glass fanlights; No.4 has an additional teardrop fanlight over its door. There are two-panel doors. Ground-floor windows have incised surrounds, while the first-floor windows are tripartite, with recessed segmental arches set in raised panels, containing 6/6-pane sashes. The attic windows are recessed 3/3-pane sashes, blind to the middle. Uniform first-floor balconies are present, with cast-iron railings and brackets.

The interior of No.3 includes a hall with a semicircular arch leading to a dogleg staircase with stick balusters and cast-iron foliate newels, and a curtail. Features include 6-panel doors, panelled shutters, Greek Revival-style cornices, fireplaces throughout, and a good cast-iron grate on the front first-floor. The basement contains a dresser with a bowed end and turned brackets.
