Description

Colston's Preparatory School, located at Stapleton Court, is a house that has been converted into a school. It dates from the early 18th century and features a rendered exterior with limestone dressings, a slate roof, and brick stacks at each end. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in a mid-Georgian style. It stands three storeys tall with a five-window range, and to the right, there is a two-storey, two-window range.

The entrance boasts a large doorcase supported by fluted Corinthian columns, topped with an entablature and a broken segmental pediment, leading to a wide, panelled double door. Moulded strings run along the ground and first floors, projecting over the windows, and there is a wooden cornice gutter. The windows are 6/6-pane sashes with architraves and flush boxes.

Inside, there is a central through hall divided by a panelled segmental arch. To the right at the rear, an open-well stair features twisted balusters, three to a tread, along with a panelled dado and a ramped, wreathed rail. A stained-glass quarter-landing light adds to the interior's charm, which also includes six-panel doors and three-panel shutters.

The property is complemented by subsidiary features, including rubble area walls and capped gate piers inscribed with "STAPLETON COURT."
