Description
The Old Gaol is a lock-up building constructed between 1828 and 1832. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a parapeted slate roof. The building has a single-depth plan and consists of a single storey with a basement, presenting a one-window range. The front is symmetrical, with a right-hand entrance block. The slightly projecting center includes a flat cornice band and a raised parapet, which holds a right-of-center 6/6-pane sash window. There is a plain doorway with a triangular lintel and an early 20th-century post box. Inside, the ground floor and basement contain paired barrel-vaulted cells, one of which has an iron-studded door and a manacle on the wall, along with 20th-century steps leading down.
