Description
The Smart Monument in Arnos Vale Cemetery is a Grade II listed tomb dedicated to Dr. Thomas Tovey Smart, who died in 1882. It features a marble obelisk set on a pedestal. The front of the monument displays an oval relief depicting a High Victorian professional, surrounded by a garland. Above this relief is a wreath made of porcelain 'immortelles'. The epitaph honors Dr. Smart for serving as a medical officer for the Bedminster Union for 40 years, highlighting his professionalism and kindness towards his many patients. At the time of inspection in 2002, the obelisk was heavily overgrown with ivy. The monument is listed for its sculptural and historical significance.
