Description
The Pratt Monument in Arnos Vale Cemetery is a Grade II listed tomb dedicated to the Reverend John Adey Pratt, who died in 1867. It features a marble obelisk set on a square pedestal, which rests on a stepped base. The monument is signed by Tyley of Bristol. The main inscription is located on the north side, while the east side displays a relief depicting a seated man instructing a group of children, with a celestial ray shining down to symbolize divine inspiration.
Historically, Pratt was a notable Nonconformist preacher in Bristol, affectionately known as 'the Children's Preacher' and recognized as 'the unwearied Servant of Sunday Schools.' He served as the pastor of the Kingsland Chapel in Bristol, and this monument was erected by the Sunday Schools of the City. It is a significant memorial, prominently situated near the entrance of the cemetery, and serves as an excellent example of the High Victorian Evangelical Movement.
