Description
The Williams Monument in Arnos Vale Cemetery is a tomb dedicated to Joseph Williams, who died in 1849. It features a marble tapering pedestal adorned with a relief of the Pelican in her piety, which depicts the bird drawing blood from her chest to feed her young. The weathered epitaph indicates that Williams was a surgeon who succumbed while caring for patients during the severe cholera epidemic of 1849. This Christian symbol of self-sacrifice is fitting for a victim of England's last major outbreak of cholera. The monument is listed for its historical interest.
