Description
The Tomb of Gwyer in Arnos Vale Cemetery is a Grade II listed structure featuring a pink granite obelisk dedicated to the Gwyer family. This tall obelisk stands on a stepped base and is adorned with inscriptions in sunken capitals on its sides. Surrounding the obelisk are cast iron railings that are exceptionally elaborate, featuring baluster shafts and anthemion finials on the rails. The corner posts of the railings are topped with Grecian foliate spearheads. The earliest death commemorated at this site is that of Matthew Wright Gwyer, who drowned off St. Vincent in the West Indies in 1842. The listing highlights the impressive obelisk and its decorative railings.
