Description
The Tomb of Francis Benn, who died in 1847, is located in Arnos Vale Cemetery. It features a marble obelisk set on a square pedestal with a moulded base. The inscription, which has weathered over time, is placed within a recessed field that has clipped corners. On the front of the obelisk, there is a relief of a lily, with the flower cut off and lying on the ground, symbolizing a life cut short. Above the flower, a butterfly is depicted, representing the soul according to ancient Greek beliefs, illustrating the idea of the soul's liberation from the body through death. This tomb is noted for its elegant Neoclassical design and rich symbolism.
