Description

A terrace of five houses at 9-17 Ashley Road, Bristol, built between 1816 and 1817. The houses are constructed from limestone ashlar with brick stacks and a pantile mansard roof. They are arranged in a double-depth plan, with three storeys, a basement, and an attic, each house featuring a single-window range. Architectural details include pilasters, a prominent cornice, and a parapet, along with a rusticated ground floor. Steps lead to the right-hand doorways, each with a Doric portico and a six-panel door. The windows are sash windows with eight-pane glazing, and there are dormers in the roof. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. The plots were laid out by James Foster in 1816. Number 9 was, for a time, the residence of Sir Henry Irving, Ellen Terry, and E.W. Godwin.
